    Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    1

    The distances are real

Australia is the size of Europe, and the map flattens that. Sydney to Melbourne is an hour's flight, not a drive, and Perth is four hours in the air from the east coast. Plan on internal flights between cities, not roads, and don't try to 'pop over' to the reef or the Red Centre on a whim. The country is far bigger than a two-city trip lets on.

    2

    The sun bites

The ozone is thin over Australia and the sun is genuinely fierce, even on a mild day. Locals say 'slip, slop, slap' and mean it. A morning at Bondi without sunscreen will leave you red by lunch. Hat, high-factor cream, and a shirt for the middle of the day; the UV index here runs higher than almost anywhere you've burned before.

    3

    The coffee is serious

Australia takes its coffee more seriously than almost anywhere, and the vocabulary is its own. A 'flat white' was arguably invented here, a 'long black' is an Americano upside down, and asking for a 'latte' in a good Melbourne bar marks you as a tourist. The chains struggle here because the independent cafés are so good. Drink it where the locals queue.

    When to Go

Australia is a continent, so the answer depends where you go, but the broad window for the southern cities. Sydney, Melbourne, the wine country. Is the spring-to-autumn stretch of September to April, when the days are long and warm without the deep-winter chill of June to August. The tropical north flips: Cairns and the reef are best in the dry season from May to October, while December to March there is hot, wet, and stinger season in the sea. Sydney and Melbourne stay pleasant through their summer; only the interior and the far north truly bake.

    Your Memoir

    Here's how you'll remember it.

    Kuranda — Kuranda, Australia

Day 2. Kuranda, the rainforest railway

    Day2
    ✦ Memoir

The Kuranda Scenic Railway climbs out of Cairns through the rainforest, over gorges and past the Barron Falls, to the village in the hills. And the Skyrail cableway floats you back over the canopy. It's the easy way to see the wet tropics. Kuranda itself is markets and a butterfly sanctuary; the journey is the thing.

    Kuranda01
Moore Reef — Great Barrier Reef, Australia

Day 3. Moore Reef, over the side

    Day3
    ✦ Memoir

The catamaran out to Moore Reef takes an hour and a half, and then you're on a pontoon over the Great Barrier Reef with a mask and fins. The coral and the parrotfish and the giant clams right there in the warm, clear water. The reef is bleaching in places and that's hard to unsee, but the live coral is still extraordinary. Go while it's there.

    Great Barrier Reef02
    Great Ocean Road, Australia

Day 5. The Apostles, the southern swell

    Day5
    ✦ Memoir

Down south, the full-day Great Ocean Road from Melbourne. The surf coast, the Otway rainforest, and the Twelve Apostles standing off the cliffs in the cold Southern Ocean. After the tropical warmth of Cairns the southern coast feels like a different country: grey-green, windswept, dramatic. Bring a jacket you didn't need up north.

    Great Ocean Road03
    Sydney — Sydney, Australia

Day 8. Sydney, the dinner on the water

    Day8
    ✦ Memoir

The private city tour and the showboat dinner cruise close it out. Sydney harbour at night with the bridge lit and the Opera House glowing, after a trip that started on a coral reef two thousand kilometres north. The Blue Mountains the next day are the last cool air before the flight home. The country's range, end to end.
