    Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    1

    The sarong is not optional

Every Balinese temple, Uluwatu, Besakih, Lempuyang. Requires a sarong tied at the waist and a sash, men included. The big sites lend them at the gate, but the loaner queue eats your time and the cloth is often damp. Buy your own for a few dollars in any market and you walk straight in.

    2

    Mind the canang sari

Those little palm-leaf trays of flowers and rice on the pavement and the dashboards are daily offerings, laid out fresh each morning. Step around them, never over or on them. The smouldering incense stick beside one means it was placed minutes ago. The family is mid-prayer somewhere close.

    3

    The Lempuyang gate reflection

The 'Gates of Heaven' mirror shot at Pura Lempuyang is an illusion. A man holds a phone with a mirror under the lens; there is no real lake. The queue can run two or three hours by mid-morning. Arrive before 8am or skip it; the temple itself, high on Mount Lempuyang, is worth the climb regardless.

    When to Go

Bali runs on two seasons, not four. The dry season, April to October, is the window. Sunny days, low humidity, the surf clean on the west coast; July and August are the busy, breezy peak. The wet season, November to March, brings warm afternoon downpours that clear as fast as they come, and the rice terraces at their greenest. Avoid the Nyepi day of silence in March, when the whole island. Airport included. Shuts down for 24 hours.

    Your Memoir

    Here's how you'll remember it.

    Pandawa — Bali, Indonesia

Day 2. Pandawa, the cliff-cut beach

    Day2
    ✦ Memoir

Benoa watersports in the morning, then down the limestone road to Pandawa. The beach you reach through a slot cut in the cliff, the giant statues carved into the rock face on the way down. Calm water, white sand, and up to Uluwatu after for the sunset.

    Bali01
    Reef stops — Bali, Indonesia

Day 3. Reef stops on the west boat

    Day3
    ✦ Memoir

The West One day trip is a boat out to the quieter reefs off the far coast. Snorkelling where the day crowds don't reach, lunch on board. The water was glass-clear and the parrotfish came right up to the mask.

    Bali02
    Bali, Indonesia

Day 4. The tiger at the safari fence

    Day4
    ✦ Memoir

The Bali Safari is a proper drive-through park. We did the jungle hopper bus through the lion and rhino sections, and a Sumatran tiger paced the fence-line close enough to see the muscle move under the coat. The children talked about it for days.

    Bali03
    Ulun Danu — Bali, Indonesia

Day 5. Ulun Danu on the still lake

    Day5
    ✦ Memoir

Last full day climbed up to Bedugul, cool and misty at altitude, where the Ulun Danu temple seems to float on Lake Beratan. Then the Bali Swing over the Ubud gorge and the Tegenungan waterfall on the way down. Three different Balis in one drive.
