    Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    1

Canadian distances are a different scale

Calgary to Banff is short by Canadian standards. 90 minutes. Calgary to Vancouver is twelve hours by road. Canada is the second-largest country on earth and the prairie horizons feel like ocean. Tibro plans single-region tours deliberately; combining Calgary with Toronto or Vancouver means two domestic flights, not a drive.

    2

    Stampede week is the city

The first ten days of July, Calgary doesn't have a Stampede. The city becomes the Stampede. Banks serve free pancakes at 7am, the LRT runs Stetson-themed cars, and downtown bars switch to a country playlist. If you're here in July, you're at the rodeo whether or not you booked a ticket.

    3

Summer is short and worth its weight

Calgary is at 51° N. Winter is long, summer is glorious. June–August daylight runs past 10pm, the Rockies are clear of snow at the lower altitudes, and the patios open. Tibro times this tour for the Stampede window; the same trip in October would be a different country (snow can start late September in the foothills).

    When to Go

Calgary sits a mile above sea level on the lip of the Rocky Mountain foothills. Summer (June–August) is the short, dazzling window when the patios open, the Stampede runs, and the Rockies are at their most accessible. Winter is long and cold but exhilarating for skiers; shoulder months are unpredictable. Snow can fall in May or September.

    Your Memoir

    Here's how you'll remember it.

    Bow River — Calgary, Canada

Day 1. Bow River, first evening light

    Day1
    ✦ Memoir

The Bow runs cold and fast through downtown, and on a summer evening you can see the Rockies in silhouette to the west. I walked the river path past Prince's Island Park and forgot, briefly, that I was in the middle of a city of a million people.

    Calgary01
Eight seconds — Calgary Stampede, Canada

Day 3. Eight seconds, Stampede grandstand

    Day3
    ✦ Memoir

A rider from Lethbridge stayed on for the full eight. The crowd was on its feet before the buzzer. I had not seen a stadium that loud since a cricket final. When he stepped down, dusty and grinning, the woman next to me said quietly that her grandfather had ridden in the same arena.

    Calgary Stampede02
    Stetson — Stampede Park, Canada

    Day 3. Stetson, mid-afternoon, midway

    Day3
    ✦ Memoir

I bought a hat at one of the vendor stalls and put it on. I felt ridiculous for about a minute and then I didn't. Half the city was wearing one.

    Stampede Park03
    Banff gondola — Banff, Canada

Day 5. Banff gondola, lunch on a peak

    Day5
    ✦ Memoir

The Sulphur Mountain gondola climbs 700 metres in eight minutes. At the top there is a cafeteria, a boardwalk, and the kind of view that makes you stop talking. We ate sandwiches on a bench and watched a thunderstorm cross the valley below us, an hour away.
