    Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    1

Canadian distances are a different scale

Calgary to Banff is short by Canadian standards. 90 minutes. Calgary to Vancouver is twelve hours by road. Canada is the second-largest country on earth and the prairie horizons feel like ocean. Tibro plans single-region tours deliberately; combining Calgary with Toronto or Vancouver means two domestic flights, not a drive.

    2

    Stampede week is the city

The first ten days of July, Calgary doesn't have a Stampede. The city becomes the Stampede. Banks serve free pancakes at 7am, the LRT runs Stetson-themed cars, and downtown bars switch to a country playlist. If you're here in July, you're at the rodeo whether or not you booked a ticket.

    3

Summer is short and worth its weight

Calgary is at 51° N. Winter is long, summer is glorious. June–August daylight runs past 10pm, the Rockies are clear of snow at the lower altitudes, and the patios open. Tibro times this tour for the Stampede window; the same trip in October would be a different country (snow can start late September in the foothills).

    When to Go

Calgary sits a mile above sea level on the lip of the Rocky Mountain foothills. Summer (June–August) is the short, dazzling window when the patios open, the Stampede runs, and the Rockies are at their most accessible. Winter is long and cold but exhilarating for skiers; shoulder months are unpredictable. Snow can fall in May or September.

    Your Memoir

    Here's how you'll remember it.

    Under — Niagara Falls, Canada

Day 2. Under the falls on the boat

    Day2
    ✦ Memoir

The boat takes you right into the basin below the Horseshoe Falls, and the spray comes down like rain no poncho keeps out. The roar drowns everything. You stop trying to talk and just watch the green water fold over the lip above you.

    Niagara Falls01
    Lake Louise, Canada

Day 5. The lake the colour of paint

    Day5
    ✦ Memoir

Lake Louise is so green it looks dyed. It's the glacial rock-flour suspended in the water. We canoed out from the Chateau jetty with the Victoria Glacier hanging at the head of the valley and the cold coming off it across the surface.

    Lake Louise02
    Onto — Jasper, Canada

Day 7. Onto the Athabasca ice

    Day7
    ✦ Memoir

The Ice Explorer rolls out onto the Athabasca Glacier on tyres taller than a man, and you step out onto the ice itself. The guide had us drink from a meltwater rill. The coldest, cleanest water I've had. The Icefields Parkway up to it is the drive of the trip.

    Jasper03
    Elk — Jasper, Canada

Day 8. Elk on the lawn at Jasper

    Day8
    ✦ Memoir

Jasper Park Lodge sits on Lac Beauvert, and the elk treat the grounds as their own. A bull and his cows grazed the lawn outside the cabins at dusk while the staff kept everyone at a sensible distance. The lake went mirror-still after dark.
