    Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    1

Canadian distances are a different scale

Calgary to Banff is short by Canadian standards. 90 minutes. Calgary to Vancouver is twelve hours by road. Canada is the second-largest country on earth and the prairie horizons feel like ocean. Tibro plans single-region tours deliberately; combining Calgary with Toronto or Vancouver means two domestic flights, not a drive.

    2

    Stampede week is the city

The first ten days of July, Calgary doesn't have a Stampede. The city becomes the Stampede. Banks serve free pancakes at 7am, the LRT runs Stetson-themed cars, and downtown bars switch to a country playlist. If you're here in July, you're at the rodeo whether or not you booked a ticket.

    3

Summer is short and worth its weight

Calgary is at 51° N. Winter is long, summer is glorious. June–August daylight runs past 10pm, the Rockies are clear of snow at the lower altitudes, and the patios open. Tibro times this tour for the Stampede window; the same trip in October would be a different country (snow can start late September in the foothills).

    When to Go

Calgary sits a mile above sea level on the lip of the Rocky Mountain foothills. Summer (June–August) is the short, dazzling window when the patios open, the Stampede runs, and the Rockies are at their most accessible. Winter is long and cold but exhilarating for skiers; shoulder months are unpredictable. Snow can fall in May or September.

    Your Memoir

    Here's how you'll remember it.

    Sulphur Mountain — Banff, Canada

Day 4. Sulphur Mountain by gondola

    Day4
    ✦ Memoir

The Banff gondola lifts you to the ridge of Sulphur Mountain and the boardwalk runs along the spine with the whole Bow Valley laid out below. The town looked tiny against the peaks. A bighorn sheep was working the slope just under the cable line.

    Banff01
    Kamloops, Canada

Day 6. The glass arc at Golden

    Day6
    ✦ Memoir

The Golden Skybridge hangs two suspension spans over a 130-metre canyon, and the wind moves the deck just enough to remind you. We did the giant swing out over the gorge after. The kind of thing you regret signing up for right until it's over.

    Kamloops02
Peak Peak between — Whistler, Canada

Day 8. Peak 2 Peak between summits

    Day8
    ✦ Memoir

The Peak 2 Peak gondola spans the valley between Whistler and Blackcomb in one unsupported run. The longest of its kind. One car has a glass floor and the ground falls away 400 metres beneath your boots. The village below felt like a model railway.

    Whistler03
    Capilano — Vancouver, Canada

Day 9. Capilano, swaying over the river

    Day9
    ✦ Memoir

The Capilano suspension bridge bounces with every step over the Capilano River, the cedars rising straight up on both banks. The cliffwalk cantilevers out from the granite afterward. We ended at the FlyOver ride and saw the country we'd just crossed compressed into eight minutes.
