Prague - Cesky Krumlov Day Trip From Prague

Enjoy buffet breakfast at the hotel. Post breakfast, proceed for Cesky Krumlov Day Trip from Prague. One of Bohemia's prettiest towns, Cesky Krumlov is a living gallery of elegant Renaissance-era buildings housing charming cafes, pubs, restaurants, shops, and galleries. In 1992, it was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The town has been bustling since medieval times, and the historical center is exquisitely preserved. Then, march off to Krumlov Castle for a taste of the Renaissance. Krumlov Castle is the second biggest in Bohemia, after Prague Castle. This jewel attracts visitors from all over the world. (The castle is closed from 31st October - 21st March; we can visit the town of Ceske Budejovice along the way instead). Overnight stay at your hotel in Prague.

    Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    1

    Crowns, not euros

Czechia keeps its own koruna. The euro is taken in tourist spots at a poor rate. Pay in crowns, draw cash from a bank ATM rather than the blue Euronet machines on the tourist drags (their rates are openly bad), and always decline when a card terminal offers to bill you in your home currency.

    2

    Český Krumlov by night

The day-trippers from Prague pour into Krumlov by mid-morning and clear out by five. If your itinerary allows, the loveliest hours are the early evening, when the river bends quiet under the castle and the lanes empty. Well worth the longer transfer to see it after the buses leave.

    3

The beer is the local water

Czechs drink more beer per head than anyone on earth, and a half-litre of Pilsner Urquell often costs less than a bottle of water. Order it 'tankové' (tank, unpasteurised) where you see the sign. It is a different drink to the bottled stuff, and the head is poured thick on purpose, not skimped.

    When to Go

Prague and the Czech towns are at their best from May to September. Long light on the spires, beer gardens open, the castle courtyards warm. April and October are quieter shoulder months, cooler but free of the summer crush. December trades the cold for the Old Town Square Christmas market and mulled wine. January through March are grey and raw, the river often iced at the edges.

    Your Memoir

    Here's how you'll remember it.

    Prague, Czech Republic

Day 1. Off the train into the Old Town

    Day1
    ✦ Memoir

We arrived to a city that had come through the wars unbombed. Every lane curving on to another square, the spires soot-dark, a beer poured thick before we'd even put the bags down.

Day 2. The clock strikes on the hour

    Day2
    ✦ Memoir

The astronomical clock did its little show on the hour, the apostles turning in their windows while the crowd below craned up. We climbed to the castle after, looking back over a sea of red roofs to the river.

Day 3. A castle painted to look like stone

    Day3
    ✦ Memoir

Český Krumlov, a day from Prague, sat in a tight loop of the river under a castle whose walls were painted to mimic stone they aren't. We got pleasantly lost in the lanes and ate trout by the water.
