    New Zealand is two long thin islands at the end of the world and you must choose which island to do well rather than both poorly. We almost always vote South. Queenstown, Milford, Aoraki/Mount Cook. And treat Auckland and the North as a pre-flight or post-flight chapter. Nine nights minimum; twelve does the country justice. Best between October and April; the shoulder weeks of December and March are the studio's favourites.

    A small note
    on how we work.

    Tibro has been routing New Zealand since 2016. Nine years of South Island deep-dives, Auckland bookends, Milford mornings, and the trans-Tasman dozen-night arcs into Sydney and Cairns.

    We work with a Queenstown-based partner desk run by Tama (originally a Routeburn track guide) and a separate Auckland coordinator who handles the North Island days, the Cook Strait ferry, and the Bay-of-Islands hop when travellers request it.

    Hotels in Queenstown are a lake-side problem. The four properties we hold rooms at face the lake; the rest of the town does not. We pick by floor and by season. In Auckland we use two harbour-front hotels and one Mt Eden boutique.

    Six routes is what we currently maintain. The Magnificent New Zealand nine-night South Island deep-dive is the most-requested; we route Queenstown for the middle four nights because that's where the Milford and Aoraki day-trips work best.

    Queenstown for four nights with Milford on day two and Aoraki on day five. Tama at the Queenstown desk routed a Routeburn one-night option for our middle two travellers who wanted to walk and a Wanaka day for the rest of us. Lake Tekapo lupins on the way back were the kind of nine-AM stop the studio's driver knew about without being asked. Nine nights felt like fourteen.

    Sydney to Cairns to Auckland to Queenstown, in that order. The Tibro Auckland hand-off was invisible in the way it should be. Tama in Queenstown was who we now tell every friend about. He kept the South Island week shorter and steadier than we would have, with a Glenorchy lunch on day eleven that was the trip's last and best moment.

    Auckland for two on the front, Queenstown for five, Aoraki for one, and Christchurch for two on the back end. The studio's reasoning. That you should not double up on Auckland and waste a flight day. Was correct. Milford on day five and a Skippers Canyon road-trip on day seven were the moments. Came home in a fog of green for a week.
