Preface, on the country that protects half the world's mountain gorillas

Uganda protects roughly half the world's remaining mountain gorillas in the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. An hour with a habituated family at three metres is the most concentrated wildlife encounter on the continent. Four nights. One Entebbe, two Bwindi, one Queen Elizabeth NP. Best between June-August or December-February for the dry-season trekking.

    A small note
    on how we work.

Tibro has been routing Uganda since 2020. Five years of Bwindi gorilla permits, Queen Elizabeth NP game-drives, and the occasional Rwenzori-and-Bunyonyi second-week additions.

We work with a Kampala-based partner who pre-arranges the gorilla permits (limited to eight visitors per family per day) and a Bwindi lodge team on retainer.

One route is what we currently maintain. The gorilla-and-savanna seven-night is the most-requested; we route Bwindi BEFORE the savanna because the gorilla morning sits as the trip's peak.

Uganda gorilla & savanna, seven nights, July 2024

Two Bwindi nights, two Queen Elizabeth, one Entebbe. The gorilla permit morning at ten AM with a habituated family. The silverback at three metres, the juvenile pulling on his mother's arm. Was the trip and the year. The Queen Elizabeth tree-climbing lion sighting on day five was the bonus.

Uganda extended, nine nights, January 2024

Same as the classic plus two Lake Bunyonyi and a Rwenzori foothill drive. Bunyonyi was the trip's slow-down. A dug-out canoe at sunset, no engine noise on the lake.

Two questions decide a Uganda trip: which permit window (June-August or December-February for the dry trekking), and whether to extend with Rwanda's Volcanoes NP for a second gorilla family.
