    Honestly

Things most travel sites won't tell you.

On-the-ground details your designer wishes every guest knew before they landed.

    Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    1

    Sunday is genuinely shut

Most shops, including supermarkets, close on Sundays by law. Stock up on the Saturday and plan the Sunday around museums, castles and cafés, which stay open. Being caught hungry with everything shuttered is a classic first-trip mistake.

    2

    Cash still talks

Germany runs on cash far more than its neighbours. Plenty of bakeries, taxis and small restaurants won't take cards at all. Keep euros on you, especially once you leave the big cities, and never assume a terminal.

    3

    Neuschwanstein books out

The fairy-tale castle near Munich sells timed tickets that vanish in summer; reserving online days ahead is the only reliable way in. The interior tour is short and brisk. The real reward is the view back from the Marienbrücke bridge, so leave time for it.

    When to Go

Germany is most comfortable from May to September. Warm, long days, beer gardens open and castles in full swing. Late September into early October is Oktoberfest in Munich, booked out months ahead. December brings the Christmas markets, cold but worth the coat. January through March and November are grey and cold, with the alpine and castle country at its bleakest.

    Your Memoir

    Here's how you'll remember it.

    litre — Munich, Germany

Day 2. A litre in the beer tent

    Day2
    ✦ Memoir

Oktoberfest was a wall of sound and a litre stein I could barely lift. The brass band on the table, the pretzels the size of a face, the whole tent rising for the toast. We left lighter than we arrived in every sense.

    Munich01
    Innsbruck, Germany

Day 4. Into the crystal cave

    Day4
    ✦ Memoir

Swarovski Crystal Worlds outside Innsbruck is half art installation, half fever dream. The giant's-head fountain, the mirrored crystal dome you stand inside. And the Tyrol mountains rose clean and white the moment we came back out.

    Innsbruck02
    Top — Interlaken, Germany

    Day 6. Top of Europe

    Day6
    ✦ Memoir

The cog railway up to Jungfraujoch, the Top of Europe, put us out on the Aletsch glacier with snow in summer, and Mount Titlis the next day did it again from the other side. Interlaken sat green between its lakes below.

    Interlaken03
    Paris — Paris, Germany

Day 9. Paris from the second level

    Day9
    ✦ Memoir

Paris after the Alps. The Eiffel Tower's second level, the city laid out flat and grey-gold to the horizon, then a wander down to the Seine. Two more countries crossed before the trip ended in Amsterdam.
