    Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    1

    Bikes own the city

In Amsterdam the cyclists, not the cars, are the thing to watch. The red-asphalt lanes are a road, not a footpath, and a tourist drifting into one gets a furious bell at best. Look both ways for bikes before you ever look for traffic.

    2

    Everything books weeks ahead

The Anne Frank House, the Van Gogh Museum and Keukenhof all run on timed tickets that sell out weeks in advance online. Walk-up is rarely an option. Book the moment your dates are fixed, not when you land.

    3

    The tulip window is narrow

Keukenhof and the bulb fields only bloom from roughly mid-March to mid-May; a week either side and the famous colour is just flat green fields. If the tulips are the reason you're coming, the dates aren't negotiable.

    Plan Your Timing

    When to Go

The Netherlands is at its best from April to October. The tulip fields and Keukenhof peak from mid-April to mid-May; June to August brings the long, mild days and the café terraces along the canals; spring and early autumn are quieter and still pleasant. November to February is short, grey and cold. Amsterdam is atmospheric in the mist, but the bulb fields are bare and the light is gone by mid-afternoon.

    Your Memoir

    Here's how you'll remember it.

    Windmills — Amsterdam, Netherlands

Day 2. Windmills at Zaanse Schans

    Day2
    ✦ Memoir

Zaanse Schans first. The working windmills along the river, the clog-maker shaving a shoe from a single block, the cheese farm. The flat, watery Holland everyone pictures before the trip tilts toward the Alps.

    Amsterdam01
    Lucerne, Netherlands

Day 6. The Ice Flyer over Titlis

    Day6
    ✦ Memoir

Mount Titlis was the high point in every sense. The rotating cable car into the cloud, the Ice Flyer chair out over the crevasses, snow underfoot in summer. Then down to Lucerne's covered bridge and the calm lake.

    Lucerne02
    Glass blown — Venice, Netherlands

Day 8. Glass blown on Murano

    Day8
    ✦ Memoir

The glass-blowing workshop in Venice was the children's favourite. The gather of molten glass swung from the rod, a horse pulled out of it in under a minute. And the city itself a maze we happily got lost in after.

    Venice03
    Rome, Netherlands

    Day 12. The Sistine ceiling

    Day12
    ✦ Memoir

Rome to finish. The Vatican Museums funnelling into the Sistine Chapel, where everyone falls quiet and tips their head back, and St Peter's vast and cool after the heat of the streets outside.
