    Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    1

    The evening passeggiata

Around six, before dinner, every Italian town empties into its main street and central piazza. Families, grandparents, teenagers, all walking slowly in their good clothes for no reason but to be seen and to see. Join it. Order an aperitivo, stand at the bar (it costs less than sitting), and watch a town do what it has done every evening for centuries.

    2

    Coperto and the bill

Most restaurants add a per-head cover charge, the coperto, usually two to four euros. For the bread and the table. It's normal, not a scam, and tipping on top is not expected the way it is at home; round up if the service was warm. Cappuccino after eleven in the morning will mark you as a tourist, but no one will stop you.

    3

    Pre-book the big sights

The Vatican Museums, the Uffizi in Florence, the Accademia for Michelangelo's David, the Colosseum. All of them sell timed-entry tickets, and in season the on-the-day queues run two and three hours in full sun. Book the slot before you fly. The skip-the-line difference is the single biggest comfort upgrade on an Italian trip.

    When to Go

The Italian windows are spring and early autumn, April to June, then September and October. When the cities are warm but walkable, the light is long, and the August crowds have gone. July and August are hot, expensive, and half-shuttered: Italians take their own holidays then, and many city restaurants close while the coast and lakes fill. November to March is cool and quiet, good for the museums and the food but short on daylight.

    Your Memoir

    Here's how you'll remember it.

    Murano glass — Venice, Italy

Day 4. Murano glass, Burano lace

    Day4
    ✦ Memoir

The lagoon tour ran Murano, Burano and Torcello in a day. Murano still blows glass in the old furnaces; Burano is rows of fishermen's houses each painted a different colour so the men could find them home in the fog. Torcello is near-empty now. The cathedral mosaics and the silence.

    Venice01
    Titlis — Lucerne, Italy

Day 8. Titlis, the Ice Flyer over the glacier

    Day8
    ✦ Memoir

We went up Titlis from Lucerne. The rotating Rotair cabin, then the Ice Flyer chair that runs out over the open glacier. The cliff walk is the highest suspension bridge in Europe; you cross it with the drop straight down on both sides and the wind taking your hat.

    Lucerne02
    Paris, Italy

Day 10. The Seine, the tower on the hour

    Day10
    ✦ Memoir

The Eiffel ticket and the river cruise fell on the same evening, so we saw the tower from the queue and then again from the water as it lit. Paris from the Seine is a procession of bridges. The Pont Neuf, the gilded Pont Alexandre III, Notre-Dame on its island.

    Paris03
    Heidelberg castle — Frankfurt, Italy

Day 14. Heidelberg castle over the Neckar

    Day14
    ✦ Memoir

The last full day ran out to Heidelberg. The red sandstone castle half-ruined on the hillside, the great tun in the cellar that holds two hundred thousand litres, and the old town below along the Neckar. The Philosophers' Walk on the far bank gives you the whole view at once.
