    Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    1

    Don't come in August

Paris empties out in August. The Parisians decamp south and the city that stays open is the tourist crust, with half the good bistros shuttered for les vacances and the heat sitting heavy on the stone. Late April to June, or September into October, gives you the city the locals actually live in. The Riviera is the inverse: August is its peak and its most crowded.

    2

    The TGV beats the airport

France's high-speed trains run city-centre to city-centre at 300 km/h. Paris to Lyon in two hours, Paris to Avignon in under three. And you skip the airport entirely. Book the TGV well ahead; the prix libre fares climb steeply close to the day. A first-class seat is a small premium for a much quieter carriage.

    3

    Lunch is the long meal

The French eat lunch slowly and dinner late. Kitchens often don't reopen until 7.30pm, and turning up at six gets you a closed door or a tourist menu. Make lunch your big meal, especially outside Paris where the midday formule is the day's best value. And the café terrace is for the apéro hour, around six, not for hurrying.

    Plan Your Timing

    When to Go

France works April to October, but the shoulders are the sweet spot. Spring. April into June. Brings the gardens out and the crowds haven't arrived; September and October give you the harvest, warm stone and thinned-out queues. July and August are hot and busy: Paris half-shuts for the holidays while the Riviera fills up. November to March is cool and grey in the north, though the Alps come into their own and Provence stays mild.

    Your Memoir

    Here's how you'll remember it.

    Both parks — Paris, France

Day 3. Both parks, then the road east

    Day3
    ✦ Memoir

Paris first. The Eiffel and the Seine, then a Disneyland day for the family. Before we picked up the car and pointed it at the German border. Driving yourself changes the trip; the Black Forest run to Baden-Baden was the first stretch of open road.

    Paris01
    Lauterbrunnen — Engelberg, France

Day 8. Lauterbrunnen, the valley of falls

    Day8
    ✦ Memoir

Lauterbrunnen is a U-shaped valley with seventy-two waterfalls coming off the walls. The Staubbach drops nearly 300 metres in a single thread. We took the train up to car-free Wengen above it, the Jungfrau filling the head of the valley. Engelberg and the Titlis had been the day before.

    Engelberg02
Mont Blanc above — Chamonix, France

Day 10. Mont Blanc above Chamonix

    Day10
    ✦ Memoir

Chamonix sits right under Mont Blanc, and the Aiguille du Midi cable car lifts you to 3,800 metres in two stages, the glaciers spread out and the summit close enough to read. The drive in from Switzerland over the pass was as good as anywhere on the trip.

    Chamonix03
    Como — Lake Como, France

Day 12. Como by boat after the Alps

    Day12
    ✦ Memoir

Crossing into Italy the road dropped us at Lake Como, and after a week of mountains the lake was the soft landing. A boat out among the villas, the gardens coming down to the water, a long lunch on the terrace. Milan and a Venice day trip closed it out.
