Things to Look Out For
Bikes own the city
In Amsterdam the cyclists, not the cars, are the thing to watch. The red-asphalt lanes are a road, not a footpath, and a tourist drifting into one gets a furious bell at best. Look both ways for bikes before you ever look for traffic.
Everything books weeks ahead
The Anne Frank House, the Van Gogh Museum and Keukenhof all run on timed tickets that sell out weeks in advance online. Walk-up is rarely an option. Book the moment your dates are fixed, not when you land.
The tulip window is narrow
Keukenhof and the bulb fields only bloom from roughly mid-March to mid-May; a week either side and the famous colour is just flat green fields. If the tulips are the reason you're coming, the dates aren't negotiable.

Plan Your Timing
The Netherlands is at its best from April to October. The tulip fields and Keukenhof peak from mid-April to mid-May; June to August brings the long, mild days and the café terraces along the canals; spring and early autumn are quieter and still pleasant. November to February is short, grey and cold. Amsterdam is atmospheric in the mist, but the bulb fields are bare and the light is gone by mid-afternoon.
