    Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    1

    Don't come in August

Paris empties out in August. The Parisians decamp south and the city that stays open is the tourist crust, with half the good bistros shuttered for les vacances and the heat sitting heavy on the stone. Late April to June, or September into October, gives you the city the locals actually live in. The Riviera is the inverse: August is its peak and its most crowded.

    2

    The TGV beats the airport

France's high-speed trains run city-centre to city-centre at 300 km/h. Paris to Lyon in two hours, Paris to Avignon in under three. And you skip the airport entirely. Book the TGV well ahead; the prix libre fares climb steeply close to the day. A first-class seat is a small premium for a much quieter carriage.

    3

    Lunch is the long meal

The French eat lunch slowly and dinner late. Kitchens often don't reopen until 7.30pm, and turning up at six gets you a closed door or a tourist menu. Make lunch your big meal, especially outside Paris where the midday formule is the day's best value. And the café terrace is for the apéro hour, around six, not for hurrying.

    Plan Your Timing

    When to Go

France works April to October, but the shoulders are the sweet spot. Spring. April into June. Brings the gardens out and the crowds haven't arrived; September and October give you the harvest, warm stone and thinned-out queues. July and August are hot and busy: Paris half-shuts for the holidays while the Riviera fills up. November to March is cool and grey in the north, though the Alps come into their own and Provence stays mild.

    Your Memoir

    Here's how you'll remember it.

    Paris, France

Day 4. The Louvre, the long galleries

    Day4
    ✦ Memoir

The Louvre is too vast to do in a day, so we picked a route. The Mona Lisa early before the scrum, then the Italian wing and the Egyptian rooms. The building itself, the old palace with the glass pyramid in its courtyard, is half the visit.

    Paris01
    Bellagio — Milan, France

Day 6. Bellagio at the fork of the lake

    Day6
    ✦ Memoir

The Lake Como day trip out of Milan put us on a boat from Bellagio, the village at the fork of the lake where the two arms meet. The villas come down to the water, the mountains rise straight behind, and the light off the lake at midday was the kind you stop talking for.

    Milan02
Florence between trains — Florence, France

    Day 7. Florence between trains

    Day7
    ✦ Memoir

We broke the Milan–Rome run in Florence. The Duomo's striped marble, the Ponte Vecchio with its goldsmiths, the David. A short stay, but enough to feel the Renaissance pressed into a city you can cross on foot in twenty minutes.

    Florence03
    Rome, France

Day 8. The Sistine ceiling, neck back

    Day8
    ✦ Memoir

The Vatican Museums funnel everyone toward the Sistine Chapel through kilometres of tapestry and map gallery. The room itself is smaller than you expect, hushed by guards, everyone's neck craned back at Michelangelo's ceiling. The Colosseum that morning had set the scale of the place.
