    Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    1

    The evening passeggiata

Around six, before dinner, every Italian town empties into its main street and central piazza. Families, grandparents, teenagers, all walking slowly in their good clothes for no reason but to be seen and to see. Join it. Order an aperitivo, stand at the bar (it costs less than sitting), and watch a town do what it has done every evening for centuries.

    2

    Coperto and the bill

Most restaurants add a per-head cover charge, the coperto, usually two to four euros. For the bread and the table. It's normal, not a scam, and tipping on top is not expected the way it is at home; round up if the service was warm. Cappuccino after eleven in the morning will mark you as a tourist, but no one will stop you.

    3

    Pre-book the big sights

The Vatican Museums, the Uffizi in Florence, the Accademia for Michelangelo's David, the Colosseum. All of them sell timed-entry tickets, and in season the on-the-day queues run two and three hours in full sun. Book the slot before you fly. The skip-the-line difference is the single biggest comfort upgrade on an Italian trip.

    Plan Your Timing

    When to Go

The Italian windows are spring and early autumn, April to June, then September and October. When the cities are warm but walkable, the light is long, and the August crowds have gone. July and August are hot, expensive, and half-shuttered: Italians take their own holidays then, and many city restaurants close while the coast and lakes fill. November to March is cool and quiet, good for the museums and the food but short on daylight.

    Your Memoir

    Here's how you'll remember it.

    Rome, Italy

Day 3. The Sistine ceiling, neck back

    Day3
    ✦ Memoir

We did the Vatican early before the crowds built. The Museums run for kilometres of tapestry and map-room before the Sistine Chapel itself. And then you stand under Michelangelo's ceiling with your neck back and nobody talks above a whisper, the guards hushing the room every few minutes.

    Rome01
    Pompeii — Amalfi Coast, Italy

Day 4. Pompeii, then the Amalfi cliffs

    Day4
    ✦ Memoir

The long day south took us through Pompeii. Streets, bakeries and the plaster casts frozen mid-fall under Vesuvius. And on to the Amalfi coast road, all hairpins above the sea. Lemon groves terraced down to the water and Sorrento for the late lunch over the bay.

    Amalfi Coast02
    Rhine Falls — Zurich, Italy

Day 9. Rhine Falls, the boat to the rock

    Day9
    ✦ Memoir

After Rome the Rhine Falls felt like another planet. The widest waterfall in Europe, the boat nosing right up to the rock that splits the flow so you can climb the stair to the platform in the middle of it. The spray reaches you well before the rock does.

    Zurich03
    Eiger Express — Zurich, Italy

Day 10. Eiger Express to the Top of Europe

    Day10
    ✦ Memoir

The day trip ran up to the Jungfraujoch on the new Eiger Express gondola, swinging under the north face of the Eiger to the highest railway station in Europe. The Aletsch glacier ran away below the Sphinx terrace and the Ice Palace was carved straight into the glacier itself.
