    Honestly

Things most travel sites won't tell you.

On-the-ground details your designer wishes every guest knew before they landed.

    Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    1

    The Japan Rail Pass maths

If your trip runs Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka and back, a 7-day JR Pass usually pays for itself in two bullet-train legs. But it must be bought before you land, and it doesn't cover the fastest Nozomi shinkansen. Reserve seats at the station the morning you travel; the green-car upgrade is worth it on the longer runs.

    2

    Carry cash, and coins

Japan still runs on cash far more than its reputation suggests. Temples, small restaurants, and the vending machines that line every street want yen, not cards. The 7-Eleven ATMs take foreign cards reliably when bank ones won't. Keep a coin purse; the 500-yen coin is worth more than most notes back home.

    3

    Shoes, silence, and slurping

Shoes come off at the threshold of homes, temples, and many restaurants. Wear socks without holes. Trains are near-silent; phone calls draw stares. And the one place to be loud is over a bowl of ramen, where slurping is not rude but expected. It cools the noodles and tells the cook you mean it.

    When to Go

Japan rewards the shoulder seasons. Late March to May brings the cherry blossom moving north. Kyoto and Tokyo peak around the first week of April. Followed by warm, clear weeks into May. October and November turn the maples of Kyoto and Nikko deep red, the country's other great colour season. July and August are hot and humid, with a rainy spell in June and typhoons possible into September; the deep winter is cold and clear, fine for the ski country but quiet in the cities.

    Your Memoir

    Here's how you'll remember it.

Fuji Lake Ashi — Tokyo, Japan

Day 5. Fuji over Lake Ashi

    Day5
    ✦ Memoir

Fuji came out clean over Lake Ashi the morning we crossed it at Hakone. The boat across the lake, the ropeway over the Owakudani vents where they boil the black eggs in the springs. With twelve nights there's no rush; we lingered until the cloud took the mountain back.

    Tokyo01
    Gotemba — Tokyo, Japan

Day 6. Gotemba, Fuji at the outlets

    Day6
    ✦ Memoir

The Gotemba outlets sit at Fuji's foot, the mountain standing over the shopping like a backdrop. A full day, which on a shorter trip would feel indulgent but on this one was just the slow middle. The children at the food court, the bags filling faster than planned.

    Tokyo02
    Miyajima — Hiroshima, Japan

Day 8. Miyajima, the torii in the sea

    Day8
    ✦ Memoir

The great torii of Miyajima stands in the water, and at high tide the whole shrine seems to float. After the weight of the Hiroshima Peace Park, the island's tame deer and the tide coming in around the gate were a slow, clean exhale. We stayed until the light went orange.

    Hiroshima03
    Kyoto — Kyoto, Japan

Day 10. Kyoto and Nara, the old country

    Day10
    ✦ Memoir

Kyoto's vermilion gates at Fushimi Inari, then Nara's bowing deer and the vast bronze Buddha at Todai-ji. The old country in two unhurried days. The longer trip means you can give Kyoto the time it deserves rather than rushing the temples between trains.
