    Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    1

    Almaty sits under the mountains

Almaty is a green, leafy city, but the draw is the Tien Shan wall that rises straight behind it. Medeo's high-altitude skating rink and the Shymbulak ski slopes above it are a short gondola ride from town. On a clear day the snow peaks loom over the boulevards. Build a mountain day in; the city alone undersells the place.

    2

    The home of the apple

Almaty's name comes from the apple. This corner of Kazakhstan is where the wild ancestor of every cultivated apple on earth grew. The Aport variety, huge and fragrant, is a local point of pride. It's a small thing, but it tells you something true: this is fertile, watered country, not the steppe-desert outsiders imagine.

    3

    Easy entry, cash-friendly, Russian helps

Kazakhstan is visa-free for many nationalities now, which makes Almaty one of Central Asia's easiest entry points. Russian is the lingua franca over Kazakh in the city, English is patchy outside hotels, and while cards work in Almaty, carry tenge for taxis and markets. When to Go

Almaty has a sharp continental climate. May to September is the window. Warm city days, the mountains and Big Almaty Lake accessible, the steppe green in spring; July and August are the warmest. November to March is cold and snowy, bitter on the steppe but the time for the Shymbulak ski slopes above the city. April and October are short, changeable shoulders between the two extremes.

    Your Memoir

    Here's how you'll remember it.

    Kok Tobe — Almaty, Kazakhstan

Day 2. Up Kok-Tobe over the city

    Day2
    ✦ Memoir

The cable car up Kok-Tobe hill gave the whole layout of Almaty below. The grid of poplar-lined streets, the TV tower, and behind it all the mountains. The city tour took in Panfilov Park and the bright wooden Zenkov Cathedral, one of the tallest wooden buildings anywhere.

    Medeo — Almaty, Kazakhstan

Day 3. Medeo, then the gondola up

    Day3
    ✦ Memoir

Up to Medeo, the high-altitude skating rink in its mountain bowl, and then the gondola climbing on to Shymbulak in the snow line. From the city to the ski slopes in under an hour. The thing that makes Almaty unlike any other steppe capital. The air thinned and the peaks closed in.

Day 4. The turquoise of Issyk Lake

    Day4
    ✦ Memoir

The drive out to Issyk Lake, a glacier-fed turquoise sheet in a gorge in the Tien Shan foothills. Spruce forest down to the water, the snow peaks reflected in it. Kazakhstan surprised me at every turn. Far greener and more dramatic than the flat steppe I'd pictured.

    loop — Almaty, Kazakhstan

Day 5. A last loop of Gorky Park

    Day5
    ✦ Memoir

An easy last day in Gorky Park, the big green lung of the city. Families, the boating lake, the smell of grilled shashlik from the stalls. Almaty is an unhurried, liveable place, and it sent me off wondering why so few people I know have ever thought to come.
