    Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    1

    Wildebeest crossing season

Late July through September is when the herds cross the Mara River. Most tours skip the prime crossing windows by camping too far upstream. Tibro's Mara nights are timed for it. If you can travel in August, do.

    2

    Altitude on Day One

Nairobi sits at 1,795 metres. Coming from Mumbai or Delhi, expect a slightly thin head for 24 hours and drink more water than feels normal. Skip the Tusker your first night; pick it up at the Mara.

    3

    Fly the Mara transfer

The Nairobi-to-Mara road is five hours of corrugated dirt. The light aircraft from Wilson Airport does it in fifty minutes for around USD 250 each way. Worth every shilling unless you specifically want to see rural Kenya pass the window.

    When to Go

Kenya runs on two dry seasons and two rain seasons. June to October is the long dry. Golden grass, wildebeest crossings, the iconic safari window. January to February is a quieter shoulder with clear skies and far fewer vehicles. The long rains (March-May) are when most camps close.

    Your Memoir

    Here's how you'll remember it.

Light aircraft — Masai Mara, Kenya

Day 3. Light aircraft to the Mara

    Day3
    ✦ Memoir

After Amboseli we flew rather than drove. A small plane over the Rift, the lakes laid out below like spilled mercury. The Mara strip was a brown line in the gold, a cruiser idling at the end of it.

    Masai Mara01
Olomelok conservancy — Masai Mara, Kenya

Day 4. Olomelok conservancy, no other cars

    Day4
    ✦ Memoir

The deluxe tier puts you in the Siria Olomelok conservancy, off the reserve. We spent a morning with a leopard and her cub and the only other vehicle in sight was the one our guide had radioed.

    Masai Mara02
Chui Lodge — Lake Nakuru, Kenya

Day 6. Chui Lodge, then Nakuru’s pink

    Day6
    ✦ Memoir

From Naivasha’s Chui Lodge it is a short run to Nakuru. The lake was edged with flamingo as always, but the surprise was a black rhino in the open. The guide said it had been weeks since the last sighting.

    Lake Nakuru03
Glaciers above — Mount Kenya, Kenya

Day 7. Glaciers above the equator

    Day7
    ✦ Memoir

The Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club sits on the equator with snow on the peak above it. We had a fire in the room, watched the mountain clear at dusk, and fed the resident colobus from the terrace.
