    Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    1

    Book the Petronas walkway ahead

The skybridge and observation deck of the Petronas Towers sell a fixed number of timed tickets a day and they go early. Book online before you fly, not at the counter. Sunset slots vanish first. For the photograph of the towers themselves, the KLCC park fountains opposite, after dark, beat any deck.

    2

    The afternoon downpour is reliable

Equatorial Malaysia runs hot and humid all year, and most days build to a heavy hour of rain in the late afternoon that clears as fast as it came. Plan outdoor sightseeing for the morning, the malls or a long lunch for around three, and carry a small umbrella. The rain is part of the rhythm, not a ruined day.

    3

    Eat where three cuisines meet

Malaysia's food is Malay, Chinese and Indian layered together. Laksa, char kway teow, banana-leaf rice, roti canai for breakfast. The hawker stalls and kopitiams beat the hotel restaurants every time. Point at what the queue is eating; the busiest stall is busy for a reason, and a meal rarely runs past a few ringgit.

    When to Go

Malaysia sits on the equator, so it is hot and humid year-round with no real off-season. The question is rain, not temperature. The west coast, where Kuala Lumpur, Langkawi and the highlands sit, is at its driest from December to March and again June to August, with the wetter inter-monsoon spells around April-May and October-November bringing the heaviest afternoon downpours. Genting and the Cameron Highlands stay cool whatever the lowlands do. Travel any month; just expect an hour of rain most afternoons.

    Your Memoir

    Genting Highlands, Malaysia

Day 2. The Skyway up to Genting

    Day2
    ✦ Memoir

The Genting day starts with the lowland heat and ends in cloud. The Skyway cable car climbs into the mist where the temperature drops and the resort city emerges. We rode the gondola twice, more for the climb than the casino floor at the top.

Day 3. KL, Merdeka and the towers

    Day3
    ✦ Memoir

The half-day city tour took in Merdeka Square's colonial green and the Moorish railway station before the towers. KL wears its layers openly. British, Malay, Chinese, Indian, all within a few blocks. We finished under the Petronas spires at dusk.

Day 4. Sunway Lagoon, out of the heat

    Day4
    ✦ Memoir

Sunway Lagoon turned out to be the kids' favourite and ours too. A water park built into an old quarry, the longest pedestrian suspension bridge swinging over it. A full day of slides and shade, the equatorial sun handled the easy way.

Jalan Alor — Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Day 3. Jalan Alor after dark

    Day3
    ✦ Memoir

We walked Jalan Alor in the evening, the whole street one long line of hawker stalls. Satay smoke, grilled stingray, char kway teow off the wok. Point at the busiest stall and you can't go wrong. Dinner for a few ringgit and the best meal of the trip.
