    Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    1

    Book the Petronas walkway ahead

The skybridge and observation deck of the Petronas Towers sell a fixed number of timed tickets a day and they go early. Book online before you fly, not at the counter. Sunset slots vanish first. For the photograph of the towers themselves, the KLCC park fountains opposite, after dark, beat any deck.

    2

    The afternoon downpour is reliable

Equatorial Malaysia runs hot and humid all year, and most days build to a heavy hour of rain in the late afternoon that clears as fast as it came. Plan outdoor sightseeing for the morning, the malls or a long lunch for around three, and carry a small umbrella. The rain is part of the rhythm, not a ruined day.

    3

    Eat where three cuisines meet

Malaysia's food is Malay, Chinese and Indian layered together. Laksa, char kway teow, banana-leaf rice, roti canai for breakfast. The hawker stalls and kopitiams beat the hotel restaurants every time. Point at what the queue is eating; the busiest stall is busy for a reason, and a meal rarely runs past a few ringgit.

    Plan Your Timing

    When to Go

Malaysia sits on the equator, so it is hot and humid year-round with no real off-season. The question is rain, not temperature. The west coast, where Kuala Lumpur, Langkawi and the highlands sit, is at its driest from December to March and again June to August, with the wetter inter-monsoon spells around April-May and October-November bringing the heaviest afternoon downpours. Genting and the Cameron Highlands stay cool whatever the lowlands do. Travel any month; just expect an hour of rain most afternoons.

    Your Memoir

    Here's how you'll remember it.

    Kecak — Bali, Malaysia

Day 2. Kecak at the cliff temple

    Day2
    ✦ Memoir

Uluwatu sits on a cliff with the surf far below, and at dusk the Kecak dancers filled the courtyard with that wall of chanting. No instruments, just the voices. While the fire-dance played out the Ramayana against the last light.

    Tanah Lot — Bali, Malaysia

Day 3. Tanah Lot at low tide

    Day3
    ✦ Memoir

We walked out to Tanah Lot at low tide, the temple stranded on its rock, and the sunset dinner cruise after took us out past the reef as the light went copper over the water.

    Bali02
    Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Day 5. KL from the tower deck

    Day5
    ✦ Memoir

Kuala Lumpur after Bali was all glass and traffic. Up the KL Tower for the view across to the Petronas, then down into the night markets for satay and a teh tarik pulled high from the pot.

    Kuala Lumpur03
    Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Day 6. Last day in the capital

    Day6
    ✦ Memoir

A slow last day in KL. The Batu Caves' long stair under the gold statue, the old colonial core around Merdeka Square, and the Petronas Towers lit up before we packed.
