    Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    1

The coco de mer, and the law around it

Praslin's Vallée de Mai is the only place the coco de mer palm grows wild. Its seed, the largest in the plant kingdom, is shaped unmistakably like a human pelvis and protected by strict law. You can buy a polished one, but only with an official export certificate; buying an uncertified nut is illegal and risks confiscation at customs. Admire them in the forest first.

    2

Island-hop by Cat Cocos, book ahead

Mahé to Praslin is an hour on the Cat Cocos fast ferry, with onward boats to La Digue. Far cheaper and often nicer than the inter-island flight. Sailings are limited and sell out in season, so book online before you arrive. La Digue, where the ox-carts and bicycles outnumber cars, is the postcard you came for; give it a day at least.

    3

Everything is imported, so it costs

Seychelles is among the pricier places in the Indian Ocean. Almost everything is shipped in, and there's no cheap-street-food backstop. A self-catering stay with a supermarket run cuts the bill hard; eating every meal at the resort does not. The beaches and the reefs, though, are free and as good as anywhere on earth.

    When to Go

Seychelles is warm year-round, just south of the equator, and the question is wind and rain, not temperature. April–May and October–November are the calm transition months. The window, with light winds, flat seas and the best diving and snorkelling. December to March is the northwest monsoon: hotter, more humid, more rain but still plenty of sun. May to September brings the southeast trades. Drier and cooler but breezier, with choppier water and seaweed on some east-facing beaches.

    Your Memoir

    Here's how you'll remember it.

    Praslin, Seychelles

Day 2. The coco de mer forest

    Day2
    ✦ Memoir

The Vallée de Mai on Praslin is a prehistoric-feeling palm forest, the coco de mer towering overhead with their famously shaped giant seeds. Then down to Anse Lazio. Pale sand between huge rounded granite boulders, water the temperature of a bath. The beach everyone means when they say Seychelles.

Day 1. The fast ferry over to Praslin

    Day1
    ✦ Memoir

Off the plane and straight onto the Cat Cocos fast ferry across to Praslin, the second island, an hour over flat turquoise water. The Seychelles are small and close-set; you can see the next island from the beach. We were swimming before the afternoon was out.

    Praslin02
    across — Mahé, Seychelles

Day 3. Back across to Mahé

    Day3
    ✦ Memoir

The ferry back to Mahé, the main island, greener and a touch busier. The little capital Victoria with its painted clock tower and market, the mountain spine running down the middle. We picked up supplies at the supermarket; everything is imported here, and the prices show it.

    Mahé03
    Reef safari — Mahé, Seychelles

Day 4. Reef safari off the shallows

    Day4
    ✦ Memoir

The reef safari on the last full day. A glass-bottom boat and then a mask and fins over the coral, the fish in colours that didn't look real, a turtle gliding under us. Warm, calm water and an hour I'd have happily made a whole holiday. The right way to say goodbye to the islands.
