    Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    1

    Dinner starts at ten

Spain runs late. Kitchens that open at 8.30 fill at 10, and a 7pm table marks you as a tourist eating alone. Take the long lunch. The menú del día is the locals' good-value meal. Then a siesta, then dinner when the city does. Fighting the clock just leaves you in empty rooms.

    2

    Book the Alhambra weeks out

The Nasrid Palaces inside the Alhambra release a fixed number of timed tickets, and they sell out a month ahead in season. The general grounds ticket does not include them. Book the specific Nasrid slot the moment your dates are fixed, not the week you arrive, or you will see Granada's great Moorish palace only from the gardens.

    3

    The afternoon shutters

Between roughly 2 and 5, smaller shops and many sights close, especially away from the big cities and in the August heat. It is not laziness. It is the hottest stretch of an Andalucian day. Plan the museums and the meal for then and save the walking for the cooler evening.

    When to Go

Spain is at its best in the shoulder seasons. April to June and September to October, when the south is warm but not punishing and the cities are uncrowded. July and August bring real heat to the interior, Madrid and Seville climbing past 38 degrees, though the Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts stay swimmable and lively. Winter, November to March, is mild and quiet on the coast, cool and clear inland; the Tomatina itself falls on the last Wednesday of August, in the thick of the heat.

    Your Memoir

    Here's how you'll remember it.

    Buñol, Spain

Day 2. The trucks tip in Buñol

    Day2
    ✦ Memoir

The morning of the last Wednesday in August, the whole town packs into one street and the trucks roll in. For an hour it is nothing but flying tomatoes and red water underfoot. We wore old clothes, goggles, and shoes we then threw away. Exactly as everyone told us to.

    Buñol01
    Ibiza, Spain

Day 3. The short hop to Ibiza

    Day3
    ✦ Memoir

A quick internal flight and we traded festival crowds for white-walled Dalt Vila, the fortified old town climbing above the harbour. Ibiza off-strip is all pine, salt and cove. A different Spain entirely from the mainland heat we'd left that morning.

    Ibiza02
Snorkelling clear cove — Ibiza, Spain

Day 4. Snorkelling a clear cove

    Day4
    ✦ Memoir

The snorkel-and-cave-cruise day took us along the coast into water so clear you could count the rocks below the boat. We swam off the side into a quiet cove the road doesn't reach. Lunch was on deck. Simple, salty, good.

    Ibiza03
Vedr going pink — Ibiza, Spain

Day 5. Es Vedrà going pink

    Day5
    ✦ Memoir

The catamaran out to Es Vedrà for the evening. The bare rock island that the legends pile up around. We anchored as the sun went and the whole crag turned pink, then violet. A glass in hand, nobody talking much, the engines off.
