    Honestly

Things most travel sites won't tell you.

On-the-ground details your designer wishes every guest knew before they landed.

    Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    1

    Dinner starts at ten

Spain runs late. Kitchens that open at 8.30 fill at 10, and a 7pm table marks you as a tourist eating alone. Take the long lunch. The menú del día is the locals' good-value meal. Then a siesta, then dinner when the city does. Fighting the clock just leaves you in empty rooms.

    2

    Book the Alhambra weeks out

The Nasrid Palaces inside the Alhambra release a fixed number of timed tickets, and they sell out a month ahead in season. The general grounds ticket does not include them. Book the specific Nasrid slot the moment your dates are fixed, not the week you arrive, or you will see Granada's great Moorish palace only from the gardens.

    3

    The afternoon shutters

Between roughly 2 and 5, smaller shops and many sights close, especially away from the big cities and in the August heat. It is not laziness. It is the hottest stretch of an Andalucian day. Plan the museums and the meal for then and save the walking for the cooler evening.

    When to Go

Spain is at its best in the shoulder seasons. April to June and September to October, when the south is warm but not punishing and the cities are uncrowded. July and August bring real heat to the interior, Madrid and Seville climbing past 38 degrees, though the Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts stay swimmable and lively. Winter, November to March, is mild and quiet on the coast, cool and clear inland; the Tomatina itself falls on the last Wednesday of August, in the thick of the heat.

    Your Memoir

    Here's how you'll remember it.

    Montserrat, Spain

Day 3. The monastery in the crags

    Day3
    ✦ Memoir

Montserrat is a half-day up from Barcelona, the monastery wedged into rock pinnacles that look man-made and aren't. The boys' choir was singing when we arrived, and a local tasting followed on the way down.

    Montserrat01
Paella where was — Valencia, Spain

Day 5. Paella where it was born

    Day5
    ✦ Memoir

Valencia for the paella. The real one, rabbit and beans and bomba rice, cooked over orange wood. Eaten near the spot it was invented. The City of Arts buildings glowed white afterward.

    Valencia02
Toledo three faiths — Toledo, Spain

    Day 8. Toledo's three faiths

    Day8
    ✦ Memoir

Toledo is a day from Madrid and a thousand years denser: the cathedral, the synagogue, the old mosque, all within the same walls. El Greco painted the skyline I was standing in.

    Toledo03
    Lisbon, Spain

Day 12. Over the border to Lisbon

    Day12
    ✦ Memoir

The drive over the border into Portugal changed the light and the language at once. Lisbon arrived in the evening, the river wide and pink, the trams already climbing.
