    Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    1

    Dinner starts at ten

Spain runs late. Kitchens that open at 8.30 fill at 10, and a 7pm table marks you as a tourist eating alone. Take the long lunch. The menú del día is the locals' good-value meal. Then a siesta, then dinner when the city does. Fighting the clock just leaves you in empty rooms.

    2

    Book the Alhambra weeks out

The Nasrid Palaces inside the Alhambra release a fixed number of timed tickets, and they sell out a month ahead in season. The general grounds ticket does not include them. Book the specific Nasrid slot the moment your dates are fixed, not the week you arrive, or you will see Granada's great Moorish palace only from the gardens.

    3

    The afternoon shutters

Between roughly 2 and 5, smaller shops and many sights close, especially away from the big cities and in the August heat. It is not laziness. It is the hottest stretch of an Andalucian day. Plan the museums and the meal for then and save the walking for the cooler evening.

    When to Go

Spain is at its best in the shoulder seasons. April to June and September to October, when the south is warm but not punishing and the cities are uncrowded. July and August bring real heat to the interior, Madrid and Seville climbing past 38 degrees, though the Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts stay swimmable and lively. Winter, November to March, is mild and quiet on the coast, cool and clear inland; the Tomatina itself falls on the last Wednesday of August, in the thick of the heat.

    Your Memoir

    Here's how you'll remember it.

Gaud light through — Barcelona, Spain

Day 2. Gaudí's light through the nave

    Day2
    ✦ Memoir

The Sagrada Família is still a building site after a century, and that's the point. Cranes overhead and stained glass throwing colour across the columns at the same time. The cable car up Montjuïc later gave us the whole harbour.

    Barcelona01
    full — Barcelona, Spain

Day 3. A full day on the coasters

    Day3
    ✦ Memoir

PortAventura was the family's day. Ferrari Land for the teenager, the older rides for me, churros somewhere in the middle. We didn't see a single church and nobody minded.

    Barcelona02
    Lisbon, Spain

Day 5. The flight west to Lisbon

    Day5
    ✦ Memoir

Two hours over the peninsula and Barcelona's sharp Mediterranean light gave way to Lisbon's softer Atlantic one. The taxi in climbed past azulejo facades I'd only ever seen in photographs.

    Lisbon03
    Trams grinding — Lisbon, Spain

Day 6. Trams grinding up the hills

    Day6
    ✦ Memoir

The city tour put us on the 28 tram for part of it, grinding up to the Alfama where the washing hangs over the lanes and a fado drifted out of a doorway before noon.
