    Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    1

    The migration moves

The Great Migration is not a fixed event. Over a million wildebeest circle the Serengeti year-round, and where they are depends on the month. The dramatic Mara river crossings cluster July to September in the north; the calving is February in the south. Tell your camp what you want to see and they'll place you on the right side of the park.

    2

    Yellow fever and malaria

Tanzania asks for a yellow-fever certificate if you arrive from an endemic country, and the safari areas are malarial. Start prophylaxis before you travel and pack a good repellent and long sleeves for dusk. Zanzibar is lower-risk but not zero; don't drop your guard on the beach leg.

    3

    Zanzibar runs on the tide

Zanzibar's east-coast beaches are spectacular but tidal. At low tide the sea retreats hundreds of metres and swimming waits for the water to come back. Check the tide chart against your hotel's stretch of coast when you book; the north-tip beaches at Nungwi hold water more reliably all day.

    Plan Your Timing

    When to Go

Tanzania sits on the equator with a southern lean, and its rhythm is rain, not temperature. The long dry season, June to October, is the safari peak. Thin bush, animals at the water, and the Serengeti's Mara crossings around July to September. December to February is a warm, short-dry window good for the southern calving and for Zanzibar. The long rains, March to May, are the low season: green, quiet, cheaper, but muddy tracks and harder game viewing.

    Your Memoir

    Here's how you'll remember it.

    Serengeti, Tanzania

Day 2. The plains running to the edge

    Day2
    ✦ Memoir

The Serengeti went flat to the horizon in every direction, grass and acacia and not a fence in sight. We found a cheetah on a termite mound scanning for breakfast, and sat with the engine off until it moved.

    Serengeti01
Wildebeest pouring across — Serengeti, Tanzania

    Day 4. Wildebeest pouring across

    Day4
    ✦ Memoir

We caught the migration on the move, a river of wildebeest grunting and stumbling across the track for the better part of an hour, zebra mixed in among them. The guide said this was a fraction of the whole herd.

    Serengeti02
    Spice market — Zanzibar, Tanzania

Day 6. Spice market off the boat

    Day6
    ✦ Memoir

Stone Town came as a shock after the plains. Narrow lanes thick with the smell of cloves, carved Zanzibari doors, the call to prayer over the rooftops. We took a spice tour and crushed cardamom and nutmeg between our fingers.

    Zanzibar03
    White sand — Zanzibar, Tanzania

Day 7. White sand, turquoise shallows

    Day7
    ✦ Memoir

The east-coast beach was a different world again. Flour-white sand, dhows on the turquoise shallows, the tide pulling far out at midday and bringing the sea back by evening. After a week of dust it was exactly the rest we wanted.
