    Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    1

    The heat is non-negotiable

From June to September the afternoon temperature sits at 42-46°C and outdoor tarmac reads higher. Tibro front-loads desert safaris and Burj Khalifa decks into morning or post-7pm slots; the middle of the day is for the mall, the museum, or the pool. Bring sunglasses you don't mind losing. The glare bouncing off the sand is unkind to cheap lenses.

    2

    Friday is the new Sunday

UAE shifted its weekend to Saturday-Sunday in 2022, but Friday afternoons still tilt around the 1:15pm Jumu'ah prayer. Government services close, mall traffic dies for two hours, then surges back. If you're planning Sheikh Zayed Mosque, go on a weekday morning; on Friday it shuts to non-worshippers between 11:30am and 3pm.

    3

    Alcohol, in the right rooms

Alcohol is licensed inside hotel restaurants and bars and almost nowhere else. The duty-free purchase at the airport is the cheapest you will encounter; once in the city, a glass of wine at dinner runs ₹2,000+. Public intoxication is taken seriously. Drink at the hotel, take a hotel taxi, and Sharjah remains a dry emirate.

    Plan Your Timing

    When to Go

Dubai is a November-to-March city. The other half of the year, the air burns and the dunes shimmer past habitability. Most travelers retreat into climate-controlled mall corridors. The Tibro window is mid-Nov to mid-Feb, when nights soften enough for a desert dinner and the rooftops reopen.

    Your Memoir

    Here's how you'll remember it.

    Old creek — Dubai, UAE

Day 2. Old creek, new towers

    Day2
    ✦ Memoir

The half-day tour ran from the old town outward. An abra across the creek for a single dirham, the gold and spice souks of Deira, then the leap forward to the Burj Khalifa and the fountains, a hundred years of city in a single morning.

    Dubai, UAE

Day 1. First night in the city

    Day1
    ✦ Memoir

We landed in the evening and the city was already lit. Sheikh Zayed Road a canyon of towers, the Burj Khalifa needling above it all. A first walk along the Marina, a shawarma from a corner stand, and the warm night air after the flight.

    Dubai02
    Dubai, UAE

Day 2. The fountains at the mall

    Day2
    ✦ Memoir

The Dubai Mall is less a mall than a city under one roof. The aquarium tunnel, the indoor waterfall, the ice rink. And outside, the fountains dance on the half hour against the base of the Burj Khalifa to music that carries across the lake.

    Dubai03
    Dubai, UAE

    Day 3. A last morning

    Day3
    ✦ Memoir

The flight was in the afternoon, so we had a slow last morning. A coffee at the Marina, a final look up at the Burj Khalifa catching the early sun, and the quick run back to the airport that Dubai does so well.
