    Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    1

    Tap in, tap out

Don't queue for paper tickets. A contactless card or your phone works as an Oyster on every Tube, bus, Overground and most trains in the city, and the daily fare is capped automatically so you never overpay. Stand on the right of the escalator; walk on the left, or a Londoner will tell you about it.

    2

    Four seasons before lunch

British weather is not a national myth. It genuinely turns from sun to cloudburst and back within an hour, in any month. Carry a small umbrella and a layer even on a clear June morning, and don't cancel the open-top bus over a grey forecast. The rain usually passes; the locals just carry on.

    3

The pub is the village hall

You order and pay at the bar, not at the table, no one will come to take your order. And you don't tip the bartender. Sunday lunch is the roast, booked out by one o'clock in the good ones. The pub is where Britain actually socialises; treat it as the living room, not just a bar.

    When to Go

Britain runs on light more than heat. The window is May to September, when the days stretch past nine in the evening, the parks fill, and the gardens are at their best. June and July the warmest and busiest. April and October are quieter shoulder months with sharper light and thinner crowds. November to February is short, grey and damp, with the city lit early for Christmas; it rarely freezes hard, but it rarely clears either.

    Your Memoir

    Here's how you'll remember it.

    London — London, UK

Day 2. London from the top of the Eye

    Day2
    ✦ Memoir

The city tour ended on the London Eye, a slow half-hour turn high over the Thames. Parliament and the Abbey laid out one side, the City's towers the other. We timed the last pod for the gold hour and watched the lights come up across the river.

    London01
    Windsor — Windsor, UK

Day 3. Windsor, the guard on the hill

    Day3
    ✦ Memoir

Windsor Castle sits on a chalk hill over the Thames, the oldest occupied castle anywhere and the family's weekend home. We caught the guard change in the lower ward, walked St George's Chapel, and had tea in the cobbled town below the walls.

    Windsor02
    pint — London, UK

Day 1. First pint by London Bridge

    Day1
    ✦ Memoir

We landed, dropped bags near London Bridge, and walked out to the river as the light went. A first pint in a Thameside pub, the Shard lit up overhead, the tide running fast and brown below. The city saying hello in its own grey, busy way.

    London03
    Black cab — London, UK

Day 3. Black cab back in the rain

    Day3
    ✦ Memoir

It rained the way London does, sudden, brief, theatrical. And we gave up and hailed a black cab back, the driver giving us the running commentary on every building we passed. The knowledge those drivers carry is its own small wonder.
