    Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    1

Tipping is the wage, not a bonus

In the US, restaurant and bar staff are paid below a living wage on the assumption you'll tip. 18 to 20 percent on the pre-tax total is the floor, not generosity, and stiffing it is genuinely rude. The same goes for taxis, hotel housekeeping (a few dollars a night) and the bellhop. Menu and shelf prices also exclude sales tax, which is added at the till, so the number you see isn't the number you pay.

    2

The country is bigger than it looks

First-timers routinely under-plan distances. New York to Las Vegas is a five-hour flight, not a drive, and the West Coast cities are hours apart by car. Internal flights, not road trips, link the headline cities on a short tour. Where you do drive, the Interstates are fast and easy, but the Grand Canyon or the national parks are a serious day's outing from Vegas, not a quick hop.

    3

West Rim vs South Rim of the Canyon

From Las Vegas the day trips go to the Grand Canyon's West Rim. Closer, on Hualapai tribal land, and home to the glass Skywalk that juts out over the drop. It's the more commercial, more accessible edge. The South Rim, the classic postcard view, is far deeper and grander but a much longer haul from Vegas. Know which one your day trip books before you set the alarm.

    Plan Your Timing

    When to Go

The United States spans a continent, so the right month depends entirely on where you're headed. As a broad rule, spring (April-June) and autumn (September-October) travel best across the headline cities. Mild in New York, comfortable on the West Coast, bearable in the desert. The Southwest. Las Vegas, the Grand Canyon, the Mojave. Turns dangerously hot from June to August, well over 40°C; the Northeast is cold and can snow from December to February. For a desert-and-Vegas run like this one, aim for the spring or autumn shoulders and avoid high summer.

    Your Memoir

    Here's how you'll remember it.

Glass underfoot — Grand Canyon, USA

Day 2. Glass underfoot, the drop below

    Day2
    ✦ Memoir

The West Rim day trip from Vegas runs out across the Mojave to Hualapai land. The Skywalk is a glass horseshoe cantilevered over the canyon, and you shuffle out onto it with the floor of the world a kilometre straight down through your shoes. Vertiginous in the best way; they take the camera off you, so the memory's the only photo.

    Grand Canyon01
    Las Vegas, USA

Day 3. The Strip, a mile of neon

    Day3
    ✦ Memoir

The night tour walked the Strip. The Bellagio fountains firing to music, the fake Venice and the fake Paris and the pyramid throwing its beam at the sky. It's all spectacle and none of it pretends otherwise, which is the fun of it. We finished at the fountains for the last show.

Day 1. In over the desert at dusk

    Day1
    ✦ Memoir

We came in over the dark desert and Vegas just appeared. A slab of light with nothing around it for miles. The connection through San Jose was long, but the descent over that single bright grid against the black made the arrival worth the wait.

Day 4. Last coffee on the Strip

    Day4
    ✦ Memoir

The last morning was slow. A coffee looking out at a Strip that runs all night and looks faintly stunned by daylight. A short getaway by design; three nights is exactly enough of Vegas before the lights start to feel like a job.
