    Honestly

Things most travel sites won't tell you.

On-the-ground details your designer wishes every guest knew before they landed.

    Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    1

    The north-south climate split

Vietnam is long enough that the weather rarely agrees with itself. When Hanoi is cold and drizzling in January, Saigon is dry and 32 degrees, and Da Nang in the middle does its own thing. Pack for two countries and don't trust a single national forecast.

    2

    Crossing the road in Hanoi

The motorbikes don't stop, so you don't wait for a gap. You step off the kerb and walk at a slow, steady pace without flinching, and the scooters flow around you. Hesitating mid-stream is what gets people clipped. Commit and keep moving; the locals will tell you the same.

    3

    Halong overnight, not day trip

The day-trippers from Hanoi see Halong Bay between eleven and three. The worst light and the biggest crowds. The overnight junks pull into quiet anchorages after the fleet leaves, and you get the karsts at dawn with the kayaks to yourself. Always take the overnight when the itinerary offers it.

    Plan Your Timing

    When to Go

Vietnam's length makes one rule impossible, but the broad window is October to April, when the country is at its driest and coolest. The southern beaches. Phu Quoc, Saigon. Hold dry through April; the centre around Da Nang and Hoi An floods September to November; the north, Hanoi and Sapa, is cold and misty December to February but clear. June to August is the hot, wet monsoon in the south and centre.

    Your Memoir

    Here's how you'll remember it.

Overnight among — Halong Bay, Vietnam

Day 2. Overnight among the karsts

    Day2
    ✦ Memoir

The cruise pulled into a quiet bay after the day fleet had gone back to Hanoi. Dinner on deck among the limestone towers, kayaks out at dusk, and the karsts at dawn with the water to ourselves. Doing Halong as an overnight rather than a day trip is the whole difference.

    Halong Bay01
Crawling — Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

Day 4. Crawling the Cu Chi tunnels

    Day4
    ✦ Memoir

The Cu Chi tunnels outside Saigon are tighter than you imagine. A section is widened for visitors and even that had me bent double in the dark and the heat. The Mekong Delta after was the soft counterpoint: a sampan through the coconut channels, the river life going on along the banks.

    Ho Chi Minh City02
Angkor Wat — Siem Reap, Vietnam

Day 6. Sunrise over Angkor Wat

    Day6
    ✦ Memoir

We were at the gate before dawn for Angkor Wat, the five towers blacking out against the lightening sky and then catching the sun, doubled in the reflecting pool. Ta Prohm after, with the strangler figs prising the stones apart, was the temple the films made famous. A thousand years of empire in a morning.

    Siem Reap03
    Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

Day 3. The hop south to Saigon

    Day3
    ✦ Memoir

The flight from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh crosses the length of Vietnam in two hours, and the cities are nothing alike. Hanoi old and close and northern, Saigon wide and fast and pulled toward the future. The half-day tour took in the cathedral, the post office and the war remnants museum.
