Kenya rewards travellers who pick the camp first and the route second. A great Mara camp is worth two ordinary ones; the migration crosses the river on its own schedule and you cannot make it cross faster by booking three lodges in three weeks. So we send you to one camp for four nights, not four camps for one each. The animals come to the people who stay still.

A small note
on how we work.
Tibro has been routing Kenya since 2009 through our Nairobi partner studio. We do not own camps in Kenya, do not represent any single safari operator, and do not run our own vehicles.
Our partner Hilary in Nairobi runs a six-person studio that vets every camp annually. The list of camps we currently recommend is shorter than the list we used in 2018, because three lodges have changed hands and one has stopped maintaining its borehole properly.
We work primarily with private conservancies, not the National Reserve. Conservancies have ten or twelve vehicles for the same wildlife the Reserve has 200; you will see lions without seeing the other vehicles, which is what Kenya should be.
Seventeen routes is what we offer. Adding an eighteenth requires Hilary or one of our designers to sleep at a new camp first.

Maasai Mara & Lamu, eleven nights, September 2024
Six nights at one Mara conservancy. Tibro had insisted, against my instinct to camp-hop. And on the morning of day five we saw a leopard kill, a cheetah hunt, and the first wildebeest crossing of the season in a single drive. Five days in, the lead guide knew which pride we had not yet seen and routed accordingly. Then four nights in Lamu on a dhow that brought breakfast. The trip we will be remembering for years.

Laikipia & Amboseli, eight nights, February 2025
We were not migration-trip people; Hilary routed us through Laikipia instead. Two nights at Ol Pejeta seeing the last two northern white rhinos. Two nights at Lewa's first runner. Three nights at Amboseli for the elephants. No checklist, no rush. The lodge in Amboseli had a hammock that faced Kilimanjaro and we did very little for two days.

Mara migration, ten nights, August 2024
Tibro and Hilary moved heaven and earth to get us on a balloon the morning of the second-largest crossing of the season. The balloon was over the Mara River when 4,000 wildebeest came across; the pilot held altitude and told us to be quiet. Five minutes that paid for the trip three times over.
