Tibro

    Australia,
    by the reef.

Seven journeys built around Sydney. A Harbour Bridge climb at dusk, a Cairns reef day, and the trans-Tasman sweep when you want New Zealand on the same trip.

Preface, on a continent that is also a country

Australia is a continent the size of Europe, and it asks for either a focussed trip or a long one. We have learned to refuse the middle. Three or four nights in Sydney, three more in Cairns for the reef, then the choice. Melbourne for the city, Perth for the long west, New Zealand for the trans-Tasman week. Six nights minimum; ten begins to do the country justice. Best between September and April; July is for the snow up at Thredbo or skipping to Cairns.

    A small note
    on how we work.

Tibro has been routing Australia since 2015. Ten years of Sydney bases, Cairns reef days, Melbourne lane weeks, Perth wide-west trips, and the trans-Tasman arc into New Zealand.

We work with a Sydney-based partner desk run by Lara (originally a Bondi surf-school instructor) and a separate Cairns reef coordinator who has skippered the same outer-pontoon for eight years. The Auckland hand-off is a single coordinator we trust.

Hotels in Sydney are a side-of-the-harbour problem. Which side, which floor, which view. Cairns is a more practical choice between two town hotels and three reef-island lodges. We pick by traveller.

Seven routes is what we currently maintain. The Australia-and-New-Zealand twelve-night arc is the fastest-growing; we route via Gold Coast over Brisbane because the flight times work better for the day-one arrival.

Classic Australia, seven nights, October 2024

Sydney for four, Melbourne for three, with a Great Ocean Road afternoon on day six the studio routed in because they thought we'd like it. They were right. The hotel side in Sydney looked at the Opera House across the cove, which the studio had assured us was worth the few dollars extra. It was. Lara at the desk answered the phone at six in the morning when we needed a restaurant table the next night.

Scenic Australia Cairns-Melbourne-Sydney, nine nights, April 2024

We came for the reef and stayed for the Twelve Apostles. The studio's Cairns skipper was who we now tell every friend about. He ran a quiet, expert day with two snorkel windows and a private deck for our group. The Melbourne lanes were a slow third night the studio had built in deliberately. Nine nights, three cities, no flight in less than a half-day of buffer.

Australia & New Zealand South Island, twelve nights, February 2024

Sydney to Cairns to Auckland to Queenstown, in that order. The studio's note before we left. That this was a long trip and we should plan the third week off after we got home. Was correct. The South Island week was almost a second trip in itself. The Tibro Auckland hand-off was invisible in the way it should be.

    Tell us how many
    cities, and which season.

Two questions decide an Australia trip: how many cities, and which window. Spring jacarandas, autumn reef, or the trans-Tasman fortnight. Lara in Sydney writes back inside the working day with hotels held on a tentative.
