Preface, on the country that runs on lunch

Italy does not believe in the morning, the way the rest of Europe does. Breakfast is a coffee taken standing up; the museum opens at ten because nobody was going to come earlier anyway; the day really begins around one, with the long lunch. Plan the trip around the lunch, and the rest will arrange itself. The country has been doing this for two thousand years; it knows what it is doing.

    A small note
    on how we work.

Tibro has been routing Italy since 2006. Seventeen years long enough to know which family-run trattorias close on Tuesdays without putting a sign on the door, and which hill-town hotel in Tuscany pretends to be twelfth-century but is actually 1987.

We work with a Rome-based partner studio run by Beatrice (formerly a Vatican Museums guide) and a Florence-based DMC who covers all of Tuscany and Umbria. Both have been on the studio's call list for over a decade.

Hotels in Italy are a family-business problem. The good ones are owned by the third generation of the family that built them, and the bad ones look like the good ones until you check who answers the night line. We will tell you which is which.

Twenty routes is what we currently maintain. Adding one requires Beatrice or our Florence partner to have personally stayed in the hotel within the past twelve months. Older than that, and the chef has usually changed.

Rome, Florence & Amalfi, twelve nights, September 2024

Beatrice in Rome had us at a courtyard hotel five minutes from the Pantheon that she had used for her own family. Day three she took us into the Vatican before opening hours. A private hour in the Sistine Chapel with one curator and the lights barely on. Amalfi for four nights from a lemon-grove villa in Ravello; the studio had arranged a private boat down the coast to Positano with a Capri lunch on the way. Best holiday of our lives.

Tuscany & Como, ten nights, May 2024

We had asked for a slow trip and Tibro built one. Five nights from a converted monastery in the Val d'Orcia, a cookery class with the owner's mother, a wine afternoon at a vineyard the studio had been sending people to for fifteen years. Then a slow handover north to Como. Driver-arranged, lake-view room, a private boat morning around the Borromean Islands. We came home rested in a way no other holiday has rested us.

Italy & Switzerland, ten nights, June 2024

Five nights of Italy followed by five in the Bernese Oberland. Milan was the place we were dreading. A transit city, we thought. And the studio had us at a private hour in the Last Supper room and a dinner at a Brera restaurant we could not have got into ourselves. The handover at Milano Centrale to the Glacier Express was clockwork. Tibro thinks about the in-between days; nobody else has done that for us.

    Tell us which region,
    and which month.

Two questions decide an Italian trip: which region, and which month. Beatrice in Rome will write back inside the working day with hotels held on a tentative.
